Each year before Thanksgiving, I have my students write a letter to someone they are thankful for. We don't tell the recipients. The letters are mailed to them, and it's a nice surprise. I've always gotten good feedback from the people who received the letters. It's a nice way for the students to show their gratitude. It's also a good mini-lesson in writing friendly letters. With technology today, the art of writing letters is almost gone! I am always shocked with the number of students who have no clue how to address envelopes. In the middle school, it's been a long time since they did this! In this lesson, you'll receive:
-The letter writing assignment, complete with a grading rubric
-Overhead transparency or can be given to the students as a worksheet, reviewing the parts of a friendly letter
It's a simple enough assignment but packs a punch. I hope you are successful with it as we are in our school!
