Thanksgiving Literacy Fun, Frolics and Phonemes
Correlated with kindergarten Common Core Standards!
Thanksgiving is such a wonderful holiday, giving us a chance to be with each other with grateful hearts and an appreciation for all that we have and all that we share.
This multidimensional unit focuses on many aspects of emergent and pre-emergent reading skills but also includes important life skills such as table manners, setting the table and cooking applesauce. There is also a focus on gratitude and thankfulness.
Literacy activities focus on CVC words, syllabication, sight words, content area vocabulary, phonemic manipulation, voice print matching, rhyming words and so much more! Fun and easy to manage activities can be done in the whole group setting or in small guided reading groups.
Original poems are included and can be used for class performances and shared reading. The “Gratitude Alphabet” words well as a language experience activity while also supporting character education development.
We use this unit to kick-off a restaurant in our drama area. It has been great teaching the children how to set the table properly and reinforce table manners. They love learning to set the table and then practicing this skill at home as well. We then set up a restaurant in our classroom, prepare a simple menu and invite parents in as our customers.
This unit will supply you with many hands on literacy activities leading up to this wonderful holiday. It includes Thanksgiving facts and vocabulary cards which can be hung on your word wall. The applesauce recipe comes complete with a poem that helps us to see that our classes are much like applesauce- different shapes, sizes, colors-that come together to make one wonderful class.
