Differentiated literacy centers for the preschool, pre-k, and kindergarten classroom! This resource is perfect for all developmental and cognitive levels of early childhood. The centers are fun, engaging, and offer challenges and reinforcement of basic skills.
This resource is set up with 3 levels of developmentally appropriate letter identification and matching upper/lowercase case centers for the early childhood classroom. Every class is different, every student is different, so this resource gives you the option of starting out slowly, building on what your students know, and offering a challenge as skills are mastered.
Level 1: Uppercase/Lowercase Letter Sort
This beginning level will help students notice the differences between uppercase and lowercase letters. Letters are sorted on to mats with uppercase showing and arrow pointing up and the lowercase mat shows an arrow pointing down. This center will help students notice the size and the shape of both. Uppercase letters are ALL tall. Lowercase letters can be tall, short, or dip lower than uppercase letters. Make note of all of the differences as you complete this activity. This is a great way to begin learning letters!
Level 2: Upper to Lowercase Letter Match
This center activity builds on the sorting activity. Students can demonstrate knowledge of upper and lowercase letters and become more confident in identifying the matching letter for each. This can be a challenge at first, but repeating activities like this one makes finding the matching letter easier and students love the confidence they feel as they become able to identify more and more matching pairs!
Level 3: Lowercase Letter Clip
This activity builds on the first two, but adds the element of independence. It also adds a fine motor skill using ‘pinching’ fingers to open the clothespins. This center allows the students to figure out which of the three lowercase letters is the match for the uppercase letter shown. Students gain confidence in their knowledge, and with a teacher close at hand for help…they can have their work checked and verified!
