This is a comprehensive lesson that addresses new vocabulary, use of context clues, story elements, story retell, parts of speech, answering "wh" questions, and making logical predictions. It is an accompaniment to the book, The Berenstain Bears Give Thanks and follows the progression of the story to teach and encourage the use of comprehension strategies. This lesson is complete with learning goals and scales and graphic organizers. I strongly recommend chunking the content into small digestible bites to address the concepts at a pace that is comfortable for all of your students.
NOTE: You will need the book, Give Thanks written by Jan and Mike Berenstain to facilitate this unit. The slides display nicely on interactive whiteboards for whole group instruction as you read with stopping points along the way to discuss, practice using context clues, predict, and answer questions. It also displays nicely on tablets for small group instruction and speech teletherapy platforms for fun engaging language and literacy sessions. I like to allow my students a chance to interact with the content by allowing them to fill in the graphic organizers and the blanks on the board, when appropriate.
