5. 4 digit number lock
6. key lock

11. UV flashlight

The students will also need access to a computer (Chromebook, iPad, etc) that has Internet access in order to research the dates of six Thanksgiving events.

A color printer will be needed for many of the printable pages in this resource. Some of the tasks use clues that involve color.

In this Lockbox Challenge, students will need to break into a box to save the Thanksgiving feast. With just a few short hours before the guests arrive, the oven has gone on the fritz and is in need of repair! The only way to save the feast is to fix the oven using the repair manual that is locked in the box, otherwise the guests will be eating potato chips and pickles this Thanksgiving!

There are 6 different challenges included in this resource. Each task will require logical reasoning and critical thinking skills. All the printable materials for each task are included, with an easy-to-read reference sheet that outlines the lock codes and setup for each challenge. The following challenges are included:

1. Feast Food Logic- Students will use clues to determine the last names of Grandma's four Thanksgiving guests, as well as the food dish they brought to dinner. They will use this information to find and unscramble letters to make a code.

2. Turkey Challenge- Students will use clues to determine the weight of six different turkeys and then use this information, combined with more clues, to add and multiply (2-digit) numbers to find a code.

3. Thanksgiving Secret Code- Students will decipher a secret message, after hunting for clues about the code. Once the code is deciphered, they will know where to find a key.

4. Dancing Turkey Problem- Students will use visual discrimination skills to solve a complex math problem involving addition and 2-digit multiplication. The answer will reveal a number code that will unlock a small box containing a UV flashlight.

5. Thanksgiving Events- Students will research the dates (using a computer, Chromebook, iPad, etc.) of 6 different Thanksgiving events and put them in chronological order. Then they will use the UV flashlight to read an invisible ink code on the back that will open a lock.

6. Turkey Beak Puzzler- Students will solve a brain teaser that involves groups of four numbers. They will find a pattern and use it to determine the value of a question mark. That number will give them a clue about where to find a code.

Answer keys are included for each challenge.

The initial setup of a Lockbox Challenge is a bit of a time investment, but I have worked hard to make it as easy as possible for you with detailed directions that include pictures. Once the challenges are set up and the locks are in place, you will be amazed by the level of engagement, degree of teamwork, and problem solving that unfolds. This makes it all worth while. :-)

Reward certificates (in black line or color) are included to place inside the box.
