Proportional reasoning, unit rates, and area of circles are all skills students use as they examine a world-recording breaking pumpkin pie in this activity. Students will try to figure out the number of people served by a twenty-foot diameter pie, world-record breaking pumpkin pie. They also figure out how much whipped cream needed to top the pie! If you are interested in exploring more concepts and activities related to world-record breaking pies, check out the full version
of this activity which also has students figure the amount of ingredients and cost of ingredients to make either a pumpkin or pecan pie that could break this world record!
To help differentiate this activity, there are “Hint Cards” to give to struggling students for each part of this activity. The Hint Cards are meant to address common problems students might have. There are also “Extension Cards” to give to students that may need more of a challenge. I have also included blank hint and enrichment cards so you can add customized hints and enrichments to fit your own teaching style.
