Proportional reasoning, scaling recipes up, unit rates, and volume of cylinders are all skills students use as they examine a world-recording breaking pumpkin pie in this series of activities. Students will first try to figure out the number of people served by a twenty-foot diameter pie. They also figure out how much whipped cream needed to top the pie!
In the following two activities, students will use ratio thinking to scale up a recipe to make a new world-record pie. Next, they will have to make a grocery list, and figure the cost of the enormous pie! This resource contains two very similar sets of these two activities: one for pumpkin pie and one for pecan pie. You could use one for practice and one for assessment, or divide your class into groups and compare the different costs of each pie.
To help differentiate this activity, there are “Hint Cards” to give to struggling students for each part of this activity. The Hint Cards are meant to address common problems students might have. There are also “Extension Cards” to give to students that may need more of a challenge. I have also included blank hint and enrichment cards so you can add customized hints and enrichment to fit your own teaching style.
This resource includes 5 student activity sheets (1 activity about finding the number of servings, 2 similar activities about scaling up the recipe for pumpkin and pecan, 2 similar activities about making the grocery list for pumpkin and pecan), 5 pages of hint and enrichment cards for differentiation, and answer keys. Color and black/white versions have been included of all materials.
