This is a fun lesson reviewing the placement of quotation marks when characters are involved in dialogue. This power point involves comparing and contrasting direct and indirect quotes. The students will then brainstorm how the pilgrims must have felt as they sailed across the ocean to the New World. Pairs of students will work together to imagine that they are a character on the Mayflower. They will then write a conversation that might have occured between the two characters on board the Mayflower. Students will prepare their conversations according to an included rubric and perform their conversations for the class. Depending on the amount of time you have this activity, students could incorporate the use of props into their performance. A hard copy should be included to evaluate the proper use of quotations marks.
This is a great activity to do the week of Thanksgiving! It is an excellent way to incorporate the speaking and listening common core standards in a fun, creative way!
