Two social studies emergent readers to foster literacy skills and supplement your fall and Thanksgiving units.
*** My Name Is Sarah : A Beginner Reader from the perspective of a Pilgrim girl who left Holland with her family to travel to the New World.
*** My Name Is Samuel: A Beginner Reader from the perspective of a Pilgrim boy who left Holland with his family to travel to the New World.
Both books include some similar pages (they are brother and sister) so the basic story is the same with the same pictures and words. They differ in the types of chores they do to help their family. Both books use simple sentences with an emphasis on sight words ( can, this, is, my, these) along with several other common sight words.
Also find included a graphic organizer in which your students to draw/write/dictate some ways that pilgrim children helped their families as well as how they help their own families.
**** I try to be as historically accurate as possible. The pilgrims did not refer to themselves as pilgrims; and as such neither do Sarah and Samuel. Following the Mayflower voyage, many pilgrims traveled from Holland as do Sarah and Samuel. This is why I do not call the ship in these books “Mayflower.” Most of these pilgrims likely traveled on one of two ships, but historians are not able to pinpoint the names.***
Thank you, and enjoy!!!
Peace, Heather J
