After learning about the first Thanksgiving, pose the driving question to students: “How has the Thanksgiving holiday changed from the original?” Many standards can be tied into this project. Students can be split up into partners or groups to complete the included activities (depending on the age students can research these questions using books, computers, etc.)
Steps & Included Activities:
1. Venn Diagram comparing the first and the present day Thanksgiving.
2. Listing the difference between wants and needs
3. Challenge activity & Results- Give up one item that you use daily that is a want not a need that they didn’t have at the time of the first Thanksgiving. After several days pair students back up to discuss how giving that item up impacted them and what that infers about other items they have but don’t necessarily need.
4. Have groups present their results to the class.
