This offering is a nice puzzle to use during Thanksgiving week. It might best be used as a last day exercise in which fun can be had while learning also occurs . . . a win-win activity. As the student "writes" a Thanksgiving Day essay by evaluating arithmetic expressions using addition, subtraction, some fairly small exponential expressions, and order of operations they'll also learn of the history of Thanksgiving while breaking a coded message. The intent is for all problems to be done mentally, or with minimal scratch work. I DO give instructions on how to do some mental adding and subtracting, and all of the addition and subtraction problems used in the essay can be done by using my shortcut method. My object, as always, is to have some fun learning.
