Rhyming is considered an initial stage of phonemic awareness. The primary focus is on helping children hear and appreciate the rhyming nature of selected words. The goal is to develop an ear for language. Although some activities can have visual overtones, phonemic awareness is basically oral and should be presented in meaningful, interactive games and activities.
