How to Play:

Step 1: Print everything out. Print a set of feathers and a set of turkeys for each team that is playing.

Step 2: Cut everything out. Cut out the feathers you chose to print.

Step 3: Give each team a set of feathers and a set of turkeys in their corner of the room.

Step 4: Explain that students have to match up the correct feathers with each turkey. It’s race to see which team can finish sorting the feathers correctly first.

Different Ways to Play:

-Give each kid a different turkey. Put the feathers all around your room. Have kids race to see who can find all of the feathers on their turkey first.

-Give each team one turkey. Have them race around room and find all feathers for that turkey. Once complete, give them another turkey. See which team can build the most turkeys in a time limit.

-Print the feathers on different colors. Have each team be responsible for sorting a different color of feathers. The first team to finish sorting their color first wins.

My class had so much fun completing this math challenge and I hope yours does too!

Fluently add and subtract within 20 using mental strategies. By end of Grade 2, know from memory all sums of two one-digit numbers.
Add and subtract within 20, demonstrating fluency for addition and subtraction within 10. Use strategies such as counting on; making ten (e.g., 8 + 6 = 8 + 2 + 4 = 10 + 4 = 14); decomposing a number leading to a ten (e.g., 13 - 4 = 13 - 3 - 1 = 10 - 1 = 9); using the relationship between addition and subtraction (e.g., knowing that 8 + 4 = 12, one knows 12 - 8 = 4); and creating equivalent but easier or known sums (e.g., adding 6 + 7 by creating the known equivalent 6 + 6 + 1 = 12 + 1 = 13).
