Use this fun, self-guided Thanksgiving packet to practice opinion writing! First, students choose a prewrite activity to think about a traditional Thanksgiving dinner from the point of view of A. Turkey. Next, an opinion writing graphic organizer is provided to guide writers as they persuade the American public to choose a different menu for Thanksgiving supper this year! The organizer guides students to state “their” (A. Turkey’s) opinion and support that opinion with strong three reasons, each with detailed support. Revision and editing (spelling) pages are included to help students make needed changes independently and guide conversation during student-teacher conferences. Publication of the opinion writing is in friendly letter format form with a “reminder” page to help students remember all of the letter parts.
Part two of this packet includes an introduction of the word “Thanksgiving” as a compound word and the meaning behind the name of the holiday: giving thanks. A prewrite activity allows students to brainstorm the people, places, and things for which he or she is giving thanks for this year. Students then follow the same process as before to organize, revise, edit, and communicate his or her opinion in friendly letter format.
Lined and unlined writing paper as well as friendly letter format writing paper is included in the packet. This packet is in black and white.
