It is always hard to keep students focused before holidays. This writing prompt hooks them with humor and improves writing skills. To begin, I introduce the prompt and let students free write their 1st draft. Then, I read over them and design a mini lesson to address needs the students may have, such as better beginnings, dialogue, transitions, etc. After the mini lesson, I ask students to write their 2nd draft using what I taught. I then repeat the same process one more time before asking students to publish their final copy. This helps me track their improvement through the writing process. To help with organization, I copied each version on a different color of paper.
