That Book Woman by Heather Henson is a great book for introducing a love of reading. The rich dialect provides a perfect opportunity for word study and learning how to decipher figurative language.

That Book Woman is a Common Core focus book for grade 3, but can be used for any upper elementary grade level. I use it with my middle school English Language Learners.

This fiction book is about a boy from rural Appalachia during the 1930’s who doesn’t know how to read. He discovers his love of reading because of a woman who delivers books to his house regardless of the weather. That Book Woman is based on the real accounts of women who delivered books to residents of Appalachia during the depression years.

The academic Tier 2 vocabulary focus words for the activities are:

courageous, foretell, persistent, precious, remote, rural, shriek, and yearn
