PRODUCT DESCRIPTION

This activity kit will help students be more aware of the impact of their language on LGBT students, and in which context certain word and phrases are acceptable or not. Awareness of homophobic language is vital to ensuring a non-discriminatory, non-judgmental, safe space for all youth. Words can be used to insult, empower, create fear, or to accept any minority.

Homophobic name calling and put downs create a climate where discrimination against students who are gay, lesbian, bisexual, transgender, or queer (LGBTQ) is allowed and where difference of any kind is not respected. Often, students themselves are not aware of how hurtful their words can be, until this is discussed.

Students will be asked to identify what statements are insults or are okay to say. Hearing various perspectives on these statements through this activity will draw out important discussions on how words used in various situations can impact an individual student and create a culture of acceptance versus fear at a school.
