Engage your students in a mathematical task investigating the thawing of a frozen chicken using Newton’s Law of Cooling. This mathematical task gives students the opportunity to further explore and understand logarithmic functions in a “real world” situation. Students will utilize 21st century skills as they may use graphing calculators or computer software programs to investigate the tables and graphs from the task. Students will be asked a series of questions to help them understand the situation of thawing a frozen object under different contexts.
This activity requires a basic understanding of logarithmic equations, and a strong background of manipulating algebraic equations and working with graphing equations on a TI-84 calculator or other computer graphing programs.
This pdf file includes 2 title pages, a 7 page activity with graphs, tables, and space for students to write their work, and a 7 page answer key of the entire activity.
