What do you get when you cross NaNoWriMo and Google’s Genius Hour? The 30-Day Challenge! Revive student interest, differentiate to all learners, and help students “learn by doing” with an experience-based project that will create many lasting memories!

Like the goals, the project itself is highly customizable for your classroom for many grade levels, single/co-teacher classrooms, ability groups, and domains within ELA.

The project goes like this:

1. Students each pick a goal within the domains of ELA (writing, reading lit, reading non-fiction, language, or speaking) and pick a daily task to do for 30 days that will help them achieve that goal. (Example: write 200+ words/day, read 30 pages/night, learn a new word each day, etc.)
2. Daily task completion is recorded on a calendar template to record what was completed and what they got out of it (using one of various technology or non-tech methods)
3. Students compete for stickers that are awarded based on task completion (many options exist for dividing students into teams)
4. Student teams meet as a support group to give status updates and do peer problem-solving
5. The student group with the MOST comparative daily task completion wins a prize at the end!
6. Students do a final informative reflection telling us how the project went (and turn in whatever product resulted from their work)

In our case, the result was a class of motivated students, group and individual bonding, measured learning, and differentiation with choice interest! One reluctant student even said he “couldn’t wait to hustle to class” to work on his project. (Not kidding.)
