Middle school students are beginning to engage with more complex math topics and processes. These 26 tips will help them develop into more competent and confident mathematicians. The tips can be photocopied for inclusion in math notebooks or journals, used to create a wall poster, serve as discussion starters or writing prompts, or used to review before tests. Here are a few examples:


Be careful to keep measurements in the same units. You may need to convert (change) from one unit to another (example: meters to centimeters). What unit does the final answer call for?

Fractions should always be expressed in simplest form. You're not finished until the fraction is.

Signs are important. There is a significant difference between -4 and +4 on the number line. Some teachers will deduct all points for an incorrectly signed answer. CHECK YOUR SIGNS.
