Help your students become competent and confident readers. These 26 tips can be photocopied for inclusion in reading folders, made into a wall poster, used as the basis for writing prompts, small and large group discussion groups, and year-round references. Here are a few examples:


Active readers participate in reading--they note main and supporting ideas, observe relationships and vocabulary, and make notes. They THINK about what they're reading.

Inferred, or implied, main idea is your author's indirectly stated major point. Can you, "read between the lines," to find that point? Can you state the point in your own words?

No, concentration is not an inborn trait. With difficult or "boring" topics, you may need to concentrate more closely to understand.
