This lesson ties into the cave scene in The Adventures of Tom Sawyer, although the Team Song activity and characterization activity can be used with any novel. Students find the Team Song Activity meaningful and fun!
A private journal opens this lesson with an inspirational quote. Students reflect on their own "cave experience" in their life before reading the cave scene in the novel. This pre-reading strategy allows students to connect to their reading at a deeper level. While reading the cave scene, students will be provided with team discussion questions and a during reading activity dealing with characterization. This discussion and during reading activity carries on until the cave scene has ended. Following this, two song examples are provided for students before they begin writing their own song about the novel. Students are then expected to write their song and then present it in a creative way after going through the teacher example. Using instruments in the background or instrumental music is encouraged.
This lesson engages students in Language Arts who have a musical intelligence!
