The Age of Exploration Webquest and Video Analysis with Key- this is a 12 page document that contains a webquest and a completed teachers key for easy marking. It contains 30 questions based on a Crash Course World History video and an online article reading.
Students will begin this assignment by watching the Crash Course video: Columbus, de Gama, and Zheng He! 15th Century Mariners. The video will first introduce one of the most impressive mariners never heard of: Chinese Admiral Zheng He. His enormous treasure ships dwarfed anything in Europe at the time and the Chinese trading network was the most lucrative in the world during the 15th century. His inclusion in the video is to help students understand that it wasn't just Europeans travelling around the world at this time. Vasco de Gama is discussed as is Prince Henry the Navigator when the discussion shifts to Portugal and their importance in exploration history. The Portuguese and their methods of establishing a trading empire are reviewed. Spain and Columbus are brought up in order to demonstrate that Spain wanted to counter Portugal's success in finding trade routes to the East Indies. Columbus's voyages and goals are reviewed and student learn about why his journey is remembered today more than any other mariner or explorer. Following the video, students will proceed to an online reading about the Age of Exploration. Europeans and their quest for trade, gold, and Christians are all covered by the reading, as is the technological achievements in map making by Prince Henry the Navigator and other Portuguese explorers.
