This prereading vocabulary activity helps students make predictions about the content of the novel through learning the pertinent vocabulary they will encounter in the first part of the book. Students are given the definitions to several words then asked to use them in context based upon the given definitions and parts of speech.
You can break this down and have it be an ongoing activity OR have it done in one period with some of it for homework (or however you want to break it up).
The "Morphology" activity is something that I learned from Amy Benjamin. She offers her slideshows and activities on her website and the Morphology is a great tool for vocabulary. It is the last activity in this resource. Look for her website and take from her. She has great insight and resources. Her books have helped me tremendously and can be used across the content areas to help teachers infuse literacy into their classrooms.
