After (or during) reading the novel, students will be evaluated on their ability to identify and apply 7 literary elements/ devices. The chart prompts students with naming the element/ device and asks students to find textual evidence cited in MLA style showing the element in use. Students are then asked to interpret the quote, and finally explain how the element/ device adds to the work as a whole.
This assignment can be done individually or in cooperative learning groups. I use this chart in cooperative learning groups. At the conclusion of the activity, I use an interactive white board spinner that has been modified to show all 7 elements assessed in the chart. We go around the classroom and each group takes a spin. They share their group's response for whichever element the spinner lands on. The chart is then collected for grading.
