Students recount Santiago's personal legend from The Alchemist, by Paulo Coelho, by recording one sacrifice, two sources of inspiration, three obstacles, and four steps to success. They may accomplish this task in pairs. Then, students brainstorm their own personal legends with a 5-10 minute freewrite, followed by a Personal Legend Mind Map or writing (depending on the student's learning style or preference). The directions may be printed on the back of the student personal legend handout. I offered the students three options: Write/type their personal legend, fill in the given template, or create their own free-form mind map, making sure to include all of the required elements.
