These prompts are designed to inspire students to keep writing over the summer. I have provided a cover that students can color and glue onto the cover of a notebook. Another suggestion is to have students decorate the cover of a new notebook to be their Summer Writer’s Notebook, just as they do at the beginning of the school year for the one they use in the classroom. A third option is to bind the pages of the packet with lined or blank paper between each printed page to create a booklet. This activity would be a great way to spend some time during the last few days of the school year! Then students take them home to write in over the vacation! The prompts and writing activities are designed to encourage writing across the genres, including personal narrative, fiction/imaginative writing, and memoir.
You can use this in the same way as you would an interactive notebook. Have students glue the prompt/ graphic/flap into the left hand side of their notebooks. Students jot thoughts and ideas on or around the graphic. The right hand side is left blank to be used as the space for students to write more about a particular idea, or to write the story inspired by the prompt. Of course, students may enjoy adding color to the black and white outlines with their colored pencils, crayons, or markers.
I hope your students are inspired to continue living like writers over the summer!
