This packet contains several poems that are informative and promote patriotism. Included in this packet is a poem/choral reading of “The Pledge of Allegiance.” The poem defines some of the words that are used in the pledge and helps to make the meaning of the pledge more understandable. A poem explaining that Betsy Ross may have been the maker of our country’s first flag is also included. There is a worksheet that gives the students a chance to examine the American flag, an explanation of why our flag has stars, stripes and three different colors and a flag etiquette page geared to elementary pupils. Students can create their own personal flag using a flag glyph. Some information on Flag Day and Independence Day are found in the packet. The students read about these two holidays and can compare them using a Venn diagram.
Besides the enjoyment of the text, the children will also take delight in the original illustrations provided. Each one is a whimsical and cute interpretation of the poems. They are intentionally done in black and white so that the children can color them.
