Promote thinking, learning, growing, and discussing with the Answering Process tool! Students grow as learners when they critically think and participate in collaborative discussions. Not only do students need to learn how to answer a question using accountable talk, but should also learn the process of formulating an answer during a discussion. These rich discussions can happen during whole group, small group, and partner work…clearly communicating their ideas while listening and building on each others’ ideas.
This tool can be printed and displayed in the classroom to use as an anchor for the process of answering questions. Bookmarks or placards can be printed, laminated, and posted to promote small group talk at
the guided reading table, work areas, or student desks.
Steps in the process:
1. Stop and listen to the question.
2. Consider what the question is asking you to do.
3. Answer to self.
4. Answer to group, share your thinking.
5. Listen to others’ ideas.
6. Rethink and revise your answer.
This download includes:
-Individual posters for each step with visuals
-6 Bookmarks/placards (different colors)
-Single page poster with all 6 steps
Teacher Tip: Introduce this process within a non-content related setting (ie. Morning Meeting) to help students become familiar with this method of answering…gradually incorporate within content related discussions.
