This unit is more than a persuasive writing unit; it focuses on the art of argumentation as does the Common Core standards. Persuasion often relies on emotion. Argumentation is about evidence and should be supported with facts and reasons.
This writer's workshop unit is comprised of 17 lessons that take the reader from learning about the genre to a publishing celebration. It includes internet links, a graphic organizer and a rubric to score published pieces.
This unit is geared for third through fifth grades but can easily be adapted for middle school. Many of the lessons can be stretched to two or three days depending on the needs of your students. It is written for Writer's Workshop in the gradual release format which goes from mini-lessons to shared to guided and finally independent practice daily. Enjoy!
