The good news is that it’s a lot easier for budding writers to get published than it was back in the good ol’ days. The bad news is that it’s a lot easier for everyone to get published than it was just a few years ago. Basically, if you fancy yourself a writer, there’s a platform out there that will publish you. The birth of the vanity press was just the beginning.

Vanity presses, or self-publishing houses, let people pay to publish their books and professional essay writing services. Don’t get me wrong, this is a fantastic business plan for the presses and I don’t blame them one bit. If someone has the cash to create a book, they’ll find a way to spend it. Whether you’re writing about deer control, your memoir or a cookbook, you can pay to turn your manuscript into a book.

Where the Lit Snobs Turn Up Their Nose

Amazon has been a huge boon to turning around the reputation of vanity presses. Granted, there are some self-published books that go on to achieve great success. Even the best acquisition editors will say that some gems go into the slush pile. However, it’s tough to shed the stereotype that self-published books just simply aren’t up to snuff with traditional publication processes.

Another contender is the virtual publication, like MСEssay service. This is especially prevalent in poetry and short fiction. “Publishing” writer’s works is easy when you only create a PDF or toss up the pieces on your web site. Unfortunately, this can cheapen the efforts and art of mainstream writers who publish only in respected journals. The term “published author” has become pretty subjective in recent years.

Choosing Your Route

I’m not saying every self-published author or writer who favors virtual journals isn’t an artist. Certainly some of them are. However, there are still a lot of old school writers and editors out there who only respect those who go the traditional route. This might include having an agent or only publishing in peer-reviewed journals.

Obviously, this will take a lot more time, patience and talent. Carefully consider what kind of reputation you want to carve out for yourself. Just because someone will publish your work doesn’t mean it’s “good” or that it will help advance your career. You need to be just as picky as the editors of your favorite house or press are.

Do Your Research

The best way to get published by a journal or picked up by a house is to see what they publish. Find out where your work fits. You might love the works published by a certain press, but that doesn’t mean your work complements it. You need to research and read in order to understand the market you’re breaking into.

Also remember that a work is never complete. Your poem or manuscript is never done. Be open to putting it down and picking it back up for a lifetime of edits. When you know your target publisher and spend time improving your craft, that’s when getting published becomes an art and not a numbers game.
