Rangoli is a traditional Hindu folk art in which patterns are created on the ground in front of homes, temples, and businesses, with materials such as rice powder and colored chalk powder. It is usually practiced during Diwali (Hindu New Year), Pongal and other religious occasions throughout the year. In this lesson, students will be introduced to this unique art form and then they will be given a chance to create their own. Follow-up and Extension activities are suggested to make this lesson relevant for students in upper elementary grades as well. Enjoy!
