This book has been growing for more than thirteen years since Alice served as a teacher mentor and answered many questions that her proteges asked. She decided written responses were more beneficial than verbal; hence the book was born. It was written for new teachers and begins with an empty classroom. It is also a book for veterans who wish to "weed out" long forgotten materials and reorganize.
Alice shares ways to manage the space and house teaching materials. Then she proceeds into the first days of school where she offers specific ways to develop classroom culture. The book includes ideas on journal writing, acting out familiar stories, reading games, and a few math activities, including operating a class store to practice counting money. A total of twenty-four content area teaching/activity units and fun ways to celebrate the end of an exciting school year are all included. The book also includes an appendix of printable images for many of the activities in the book. Some games are sold separately.
