After learning what restricts the growth of The Awakening's protagonist, students are asked to explore the "sphere" in which they live. In a one to two-day creative art project, students have the freedom to create any artistic exploration of the roles that define them in modern society.
I love this project to help kids connect to a 19th-century work and make it relevant in their world. Although this is designed for use with Chopin's novella, the same assignment could be adapted to work well with any novel featuring a character who feels trapped within their societal role. It could also be adapted to work as an identity project without reference to a literary work.
