This is a more engaging and rigorous alternative to a unit test for The Awakening by Kate Chopin. I actually launch this project before beginning to read to get students invested and curious about the "drama" that will unfold in The Awakening.
After finishing the novel, students must make a television script for a Jerry Springer episode. I actually show a (school appropriate) clip of Jerry Springer before giving students project instructions to get them even more excited about the upcoming novel. This project is designed for groups of three or four, but it can be edited if preferred.
While this is a group project, each student will be assessed on his/her role only. Roles include writing the television script, writing a summary explaining how the script accurately represents the novel, and designing a social media page for The Jerry Springer Show. A rubric is included for each role. Assigning roles in group work guarantees that the assignment is graded fairly for each group member and the workload is divided evenly.
Students are expected to act their script out in class, videotape it outside of school to show in class, or transform it into a puppet show performance during class.
