Students will begin this activity by watching the Crash Course video: The Spanish Empire, Silver, & Runaway Inflation and then answering a series of questions. The video provides a brief overview of both the Aztec and Inca Empires. Their societal structure, culture, and technological achievements of each empire all discussed. Aztec religion and its use of human sacrifice and the beautiful capitol of Tenochtitlan are both reviewed. The Incan system of Met'a and the quipu are both reviewed as well. The Spanish and their quest for precious minerals are then introduced and the massive amounts of silver that were located in the New World help explains why their empire quickly became the richest and most powerful in Europe. The harsh treatment of the conquered Aztecs and Incans are covered, as is the eventual downfall of the Spanish Empire due to inflation and constant European warfare. After finishing the video, students will read an article which will cover in more detail how the Spanish ruled their colonies. The encomienda system, the impact of disease on the American Indians, and the melting pot of cultures that emerged in the Spanish Empire are all examined.
