A Comprehensive Essay Writing Rubric.
This essay rubric makes the essay grading straight-forward and objective. The points and requirements are easy to adjust and tailor to particulars of any essay assignment. The document features both a full page size, and a half-sheet to save paper. Margins must be set at 0.5 all around for the half-sheet to work well.
I have shared this rubric with many colleagues, and all have enjoyed working with it. Even my students love this rubric because it helps them have confidence that they have met the requirements, and that I have graded them fairly. I developed this rubric in my first years of teaching at an alternative education school in which students really struggled to write a structured essay, and they struggled almost equally to understand why they received the score that they did. When I handed them this rubric in conjunction with their essay assignment, they began to use it as a checklist for their writing. The essay score was clear and path to improvement was equally clear. This was such a blessing to many students who have stated that essay grades feel arbitrary and subjective.
Last year, a new ELL teacher joined our department, and she came to me looking for help with coaching writing with her students. I handed her this rubric, and she raves about its success with her students and how easy it makes her grading!
I have also seen departmental and cross-curricular consistency when peer teachers have used this rubric. We practiced quality checks and graded blank copies of essays that our peers had graded, and we would always come within just a few points of each other (this also worked very well for my long-term sub during my maternity leave). I have now been teaching for eleven years, and I still use this rubric with all my students.
If you are a new teacher, or you are dissatisfied with the current writing rubric, this one will really aid in your work.
