Reading groups are my favorite part of the day with lively discussions and focused students. Students tend to talk with their hands and lean across the table when we begin discussing a book! I love it when they exclaim, "Noooo!" when the buzzer goes off signalling the end of reading group time.
I've sectioned each chapter into four parts:
Discussion questions are just a "jumping off" point. I tend to ask other questions depending on my students' answers. These questions keep me on track as I cover reading strategies. Vocabulary can be covered during discussion or assigned to students. After the day's reading, I assign one question for students to answer in their reading notebooks. They know I expect complete sentences and creative answers with lots of higher level thinking! The projects should end up being unique to each student..
