The BFG is a great book to read aloud in order to teach strategies for tackling tricky, unfamiliar vocabulary. I created these four word banks, which students used during whole-class read alouds of the book. Each time we encountered one of the words, we would stop to figure out its meaning using a variety of strategies. These materials can also be given to a book club, reading partnership, or even individual readers.
Each word bank includes an excerpt from the text from which the word was selected in order to help provide context clues. In addition, Word Bank #2 introduces a simile hunt. Word Bank #3 includes a strong example of a developing character theory. Also included is a teacher copy that features possible definitions for each word.
