This year I decided to try teaching poetry through forms rather than by theme, nationality, era, or specific poet. It has been a very refreshing new way to teach poetry! If you like the idea of teaching poetry through form, please check out the other parts of this unit: the elegy, the villanelle, the ode, the sonnet, the sestina, and the pantoum.
Each lesson includes background about the form itself and guided lessons through examples of ancient, classic, and modern poets using the form.
In addition, each lesson offers students the opportunity to create their own version of each form. This lesson also includes an additional assignment over modern ballads as well as a quiz with answer key.
