This fun, classic ESL exercise works in almost any classroom and at almost any level.
It requires the students to consider the relative importance to society of various occupations, ranking them in order. It also builds in moral choices connected with the relative value of business people, mothers, artists, scientists, teachers and sports personalities.
It never fails to generate debate and controversy, and a myriad versions of it exist. This is my own favorite, crafted carefully through dozens of classroom iterations to produce the best balance I can find.
