The Barn, by Avi - Literature Unit
Reading Level: S
This is a literature unit intended for students in approximately grades 3-5. It is an ideal text for fourth grade students studying the history of their state.
The Barn, by Avi, is a relatively short chapter book. It is comprised of 106 pages. The majority of the chapters are 2-3 pages in length. Thus, it is a great text for students to practice writing chapter summary sentences. The goal of summarizing is for the reader to understand the text. Effective summarizing includes maintaining meaning and logical order.
Most chapter response pages ask students to locate between 1-3 unfamiliar words to use in a Frayer Model Vocabulary template. Within the Student Copy, I’ve included one separate page with two Frayer Model templates. You may want to print many back to back copies of this page to be available for the students to use while reading the entire book.
I have broken down the book into sections. Each section includes a student page for writing a summary sentence for each chapter, identifying unfamiliar vocabulary words, and answering comprehension questions.
The Teacher Copy includes a written summary of each chapter, the questions with answers, as well as vocabulary words with definitions.
Towards the end of the Student Copy pages I’ve included a list of vocabulary words with and without the definitions. This is an area for differentiation and/or personalization. I have not included lines on the vocabulary sheets as the intent is for students to use the Frayer Model Templates. (See page two of the Student Copy)
