Students analyze 2 accounts from the Civil War of the Battle of Antietam and answer 17 questions, including comparing the accounts. They also discuss the Emancipation Proclamation in relation to the events at Antietam. One question is a creative activity. The answers are included where appropriate and this would be great for a sub!
Sample questions include:
--Inferring from the text, describe the difference in the civilian wartime experiences pre-battlefield photographs and after photographers started taking those pictures and making them accessible to the public.
--What was the status of the battle when Hitchcock arrived? How might it have affected his mindset?
--Explain the meaning of the phrase "presaged fearful work" in your own words.
--What kind of sense does the phrase "the joy of conflict" make in the context of a battle?
--How do these two accounts compare to each other? Is one more of what you expect in a battle account than the other? Why or why not?
