BOOK COVER PREDICTION:
Book covers suggest elements of a story, such as who will be involved, what will happen, and when and where the story is set. The first page of this resource asks students to consider the who, what, when, where, how, and why of a text, and provided a prompting question for each section. Students are required to share their thoughts with a partner and start making some predictions. Sometimes a quick 'think, pair, share' works quite well for this activity.
BOOK COVER ANALYSIS:
The stylistic choices for book covers can often indicate what will happen in a story, the themes we will encounter, and the moods we will experience. Students discuss the elements such as text, symbolism, lighting, colour, and composition with a partner or group, and make notes to share with the class.
I print these sheets double-sided and once completed by students, alternate which sides are put on display. Looks great when you add the clouds from my other resource - The Beauty is in the Walking | THEMES | Pre-reading Activity.
This type of resource is also a great way to incorporate/pre-assess and begin to develop students' visual literacy skills.
Happy predicting and analysing!
