Students can begin to develop an understanding of some of the major themes discovered in James Moloney's 'The Beauty is in the Walking' through completing this task.
The resources includes six 'clouds' that can be cut out and filled in with student responses before displayed in the classroom. Each cloud focuses on one of the following themes and provided 3-4 prompting questions for students to discuss and respond to, enabling them to make links between the novel's themes and their own lives.
- Race and Racism
- Identity: Conformity and Otherness
- Masculinity and Gender Roles
- City Vs. Country
I have also included another set, where clouds are a quarter of the size and have the theme listed, but are only accompanied by one question (per cloud), which may allow you to use this task in a different way - it's completely up to you! Maybe your students could pick one from each theme that they feel they can respond most effectively to, or you can differentiate the task by providing student with questions set at the right level of challenge for them (readiness).
