In this lesson, students will summarize who Christopher Columbus is and explore his views on Native American communities and their land. To do this, they will need to read a secondary source (not provided) to fill in a graphic organizer with main details about Columbus' story and then summarize those details in 1 to 2 sentences. A graphic organizer is provided to help walk students through this. After learning about who columbus was, they will then read an excerpt from a letter Columbus wrote to Spain and answer text dependent questions. Lastly, students will be asked to challenge their thinking by answering a Document Based Questions; Do you believe Columbus' had a negative or positive view of Native Americans? They will need to use evidence to support their answers.
In addition, a Do Now is provided along with an optional KWL Chart about Columbus to assess students knowledge before they read and create a summary.
