The Berlin Airlift Webquest and Video Analysis with Key- this is a 12 page document that contains a webquest and a completed teacher’s key for easy marking. It contains 31 questions based on an online tutorial video and the history.com website.
Students will begin this assignment by watching the online tutorial video:The Berlin Airlift Explained in 5 Minutes. The video will introduce the time period and go over the key themes and events of the time. The United States policy of containment towards communism, the Marshall Plan, and the partition of Germany (and Berlin) are all reviewed in order for students to understand the causes of the Soviet blockade of West Berlin. Stalin and his fear of the West and the resulting blockade of West Berlin are covered, as is the Western Allies response- the Berlin Airlift. The number of flights, amount of goods delivered, and the time frame of the airlift are all reviewed. The video concludes with the eventual lifting of the blockade and mentions the building of the Berlin Wall in the 1960's.
Following the video, students will proceed to the history.com website and read an article about the Berlin airlift. The article will go into greater detail about the partition of Germany, Soviet fears about the resurgence of a united Germany, the blockade of the city, and the sheer volume of aircraft and goods involved in the airlift. The article also goes into detail about how the Cold War really began to take shape as a result of the Berlin blockade/airlift- the creation of NATO and the creation of West Germany.
This webquest can be easily used as an introduction to the topic, a study guide, or a quick and easy sub plan.
