This 24 page document is a complete reading guide for The Best Short Stories of the Modern Age, edited by Douglas Angus.
It includes the following:
- a Literary Movements Timeline- detailing each movement and the major authors associated with each.
For each story:
- background information on the story and the author
-vocabulary to learn (I give a reading quiz to assess and it includes basic plot questions and vocabulary matching. These quizzes are sold as a separate document if you are interested)
-Any significant literary devices to look for in the story
I used this guide with College Prep seniors- they read one story weekly and on Fridays they discussed it with a small discussion group. They took reading quizzes as well, and wrote 1-2 page analysis papers weekly.
If you're interested in modeling this project, it really helped my kids with the following skills:
-independent reading and analysis
-analytical writing skills
-group discussion: speaking and collaboration
-literary theory- using the historical context, genre, author biography, etc. to analyze stories.
They really enjoyed the small group discussions and hearing each other's perspective on the stories.
