Product Description
This was a definite favorite of my students from kindergarten to third grade. The Big Cheese is a student recognition program that I typically started in October.
Each week a different child was selected to be the Big Cheese for that week. As the Big Cheese, s/he created a poster of their life. I always had a model of a poster of my life, which included pictures of my family, my dog, and things I loved and it was displayed from Open House or Meet Your Teacher Day to October.
At Open House in August/September, I gave out the information regarding the program. It is included here. Then at the end of September, I sent out a schedule to let the parents know when it was their child’s week. I have an editable form that you can type your kids’ names and their week.
On the first day as their reign as the Big Cheese, they presented their poster, shared any items they brought that would provide more insight into their life, filled the Guess Jar, and shared their glyph. A glyph is a personal picture graph. It is included here as well. I also let them choose a Big Cheese button to wear during their reign. Button inserts included here. Button holders sold separately HERE and come six to a pack. You could buy enough buttons holders for each kid to have one. I just let the kids pick which they wanted to wear and then the button was returned at the end of the week.
After the poster and glyph were shared, I used chart paper to model writing an acrostic poem. Using the child’s name and writing it vertically, the class came up with adjectives or short phrases to give compliments to the Big Cheese. The Big Cheese took the chart paper home after I typed into the template provided here. I took their photograph and inserted it into the template. These pages were displayed and eventually put into a class book that could be taken home after it was completed. At the end of the year, I raffled it off.
Many years later, a former first grader, who was then in her 20’s posted a picture of it on Facebook! Building memories!!
On the last day of their reign, we shared the Guess Jar. Directions for the guess jar are included. You need to supply your own jar. I typically used one of the plastic containers from Sam’s Club or Costco that was filled with some type of candy to use as my first jar and model how to make estimates. You could have kids make guesses throughout the week on the slips of paper I have provided and then you could draw a name to see how close the guess was to the actual number or you could do it all on one day. I did it on Fridays and everyone shared their guess. I have also included two different size labels you could put on your guess jar.
During the week, my students wrote notes or letters to the Big Cheese, which was put into a book as a keepsake for the Big Cheese. Included here are two different size books, depending on your kids’ writing abilities. One is scaffolded with different lines and a place to draw a picture which measures 8.5 x 5 inches and then a full-size 8.5 x 11-inch book for more advanced writers. Both come with covers that I would print on yellow paper.
Kids could complete this during morning work or during writing time.
Also included is a banner for your bulletin board. Print, laminate, cut, and hang. You can punch holes in the corners and thread a ribbon through to hang. You will want to hang the child’s poster, the glyph, the “Can You Read Out Glyph?” sign, and “Check Out Our Big Cheese”. Makes a super cute bulletin board that will stay up all year long.
