In the era of standardized testing, we are always looking for ways to prepare our students for taking “The Test”. We spend hours upon hours teaching our content but rarely do we give the same attention to general test taking skills.
This became apparent to me my first year teaching third grade. My sweet kids knew the content but did not have ANY schema as to what the state wide test was. It was my mission to teach them all about tests- how they work, who makes them, what they are for, and how to actually sit and take this type of test. It was important for me to come up with ways to do this without scaring them or leaving them feeling threatened- that was for me to feel as their teacher.
This unit contains 8 lessons on general test taking knowledge and skills, student response sheets to go with the lessons, examples of anchor charts from my own classroom, and ideas for a culminating Spirit Week or Pep Rally to get ready for the Big Test!
As each state uses a different test, this is a very generalized unit. YOU will need to be familiar with YOUR state test, its vocabulary, and specific rules. It will be helpful for you to have sample passages and questions that are formatted similar to your state test for use in some of these lessons. If you are unsure about where to find this type of information for your state, please talk to other teachers in your school or reference your state’s Department of Education website.
I truly hope that you and your students will enjoy the season of test preparation using this packet. Please let me know if you have any questions or need any support.
